Profile of Abdolmalik Regi
Abdolmalik Regi, the feared militant commander arrested on February 23, 2010, was the most wanted man in Iran. He was born in 1983 in Zahedan, the capital city of Siestan-Balochistan. Regi was the third among his six brothers and two sisters. All his brothers had joined Jundullah (Soldiers of God) when Regi formed this shadowy organization in 2002. He has two kids.
Considered to be one of the youngest militant commanders, Regi got his earlier education in a Sunni seminary in Zahedan. Later, he was enrolled in Karachi's Darul Uloom.
He was 17 when, according to him, hanging of Baloch youth in Zahedan by the theocratic Iranian regime changed his religo-political outlook. He decided to fight the injustices of the oppressive Iranian government against the Baloch.
Jundullah attracted international attention in 2003 when it claimed responsibility for attacks on Iranian security officials and kidnapping of a number of influential figures. Initially, it was believed to be an al-Qaeda linked anti-Shiite Sunni group because it beheaded a number of kidnapped Iranian officials in a manner which is typical of Al-Qaeda and Taliban groups. However, in later years, Regi tried to soften his group’s image and claimed that he was fighting for the religious and ethnic rights of the Baloch people in Iran. However, unlike, Baloch nationalist militant groups in Pakistan, Jundullah has never demanded separation for Iran.
In an apparent bid to achieve international recognition and gain support of other dissident religious and political groups in Iran, Regi changed the name of his organization from Jundullah to People’s Resistance Movement of Iran (PRMI). However, the group is still popularly known as Jundullah. According to the arrested militant leader, his organization has more than 2,000 members. Regi has been the only Jundullah leader who is known publicly. Nothing else is public about his shadowy group.
Regi has never described himself as a nationalist leader, but during his media interactions, the 28-year-old Jundullah chief has claimed that he was fighting for the religious and national rights of the Baloch people in Iran. Iran has dubbed him as an US agent, tasked to destablise Iran – an allegation Regi has rejected as Iran’s propaganda.
A very cautious person, Regi has been known for his deceiving tactics. It is said that he has never stayed at the same place for more than two nights. Some say that he never used to shake hands with anyone without wearing gloves. Despite the fact that he was not a literate in English, he has a profound study of Western political literature. He often used to quote Henry Kissinger and other Western thinkers and diplomats during interviews with journalists.
Jundullah has claimed responsibility for some major attacks in Iran. In 2005, the group attacked Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmedinijad during his visit to Balochistan, killing his security guard. On March 16, 2006, at least 21 persons were killed in an attack in Tasooki, bordering Pakistan. Iran had held Jundullah responsible for the attack. A car bomb attack on a bus of the elite Iranian Revolutionary Guards on February 14, 2007, killed 18 Iranian security officials. On Dec 29, 2008, a Jundullah suicide bomber hit the army garrison in Sarawan, killing more than 50 Army men. Jundullah had claimed responsibility for the attack, saying Regi’s younger brother, 24-year-old Abdul Ghafoor, had carried out the attack.
On Jan 25, 2009, the Iranian police was ambushed by Jundullah’s fighters. Over 12 policemen were killed. On May 29, 2009, a suicide bomber attacked a Shiite mosque in the Zahedan city, killing 25 people and injuring 125.
However, the most shocking attack for Iran came on Oct 18, 2009, when a suicide bomber of the group targeted a meeting between the top Revolutionary Guards officials and local elders in Pishin. Over 42 persons, including deputy commander of the Iranian elite force General Noor Ali Shooshtari and its provincial chief Rajab Ali, were killed
